The First Sports Day of Pragathi Alt School: A Celebration of Energy, Teamwork, and Learning
March 1st, 2025, marked a momentous day for Pragathi Alt School as we hosted our very first Sports Day. The event commenced at 3:30 PM with great enthusiasm and excitement. Dr. Radhika Bharath (PT) graced the occasion as the chief guest, adding to the prestige of this special day. An interactive and thought-provoking speech by her was a moment of inspiration, reinforcing the importance of inclusive education and personal growth. The anticipation and enthusiasm for the day’s events were palpable, and the spirit of sportsmanship was evident from the very beginning.
Preparation and Practice: Overcoming Challenges
One of the challenges we faced while preparing for Sports Day was the lack of space for practice. However, with determination and resourcefulness, we rented a turf where students practiced diligently. This preparation phase was an incredible learning experience for them, as they not only honed their physical skills but also developed discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
For a special school like Pragathi Alt School, which focuses on inclusive education and alternate learning, this event was an opportunity to highlight the abilities of all students, regardless of their learning styles or physical capabilities.
The Grand Event Unfolds
The much-awaited day began with an impressive march past, setting the tone for the rest of the event. The synchronized movements and disciplined formations reflected the hard work put in by the students.
This was followed by a series of mesmerizing performances, starting with the chair drill, hula hoop drill and the yoga performance. Parents, visitors, and the chief guest were all highly appreciative of the sincere efforts put in by the students.
Exciting Competitions and Sportsmanship
Following the performances, it was time for some thrilling competitions. Students participated in various events such as:
• Running race
• Lemon and spoon race
• Three-legged race
• Relay race
• Hurdles
Each participant gave their best, pushing their limits to win. Even those who weren’t usually inclined towards physical activities realized the importance of fitness and movement. The day was not just about winning but about participating with zeal, supporting teammates, and learning valuable life lessons. There were games for teachers and parents also.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the event was the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the students. Regardless of which house they belonged to, students cheered for one another, celebrating victories and offering encouragement in moments of loss. The sense of camaraderie and mutual support made the day even more special.
Post-Event Reflections: Learning Beyond the Field
The excitement of Sports Day did not end with the final event. In the following days, a sports day analysis session was conducted, where students reflected on their experiences. They were encouraged to think critically and answer thought-provoking questions such as:
• What were your key takeaways from participating in Sports Day?
• Did this event help you discover new aspects of yourself?
• Has your perception of your peers changed based on their performance in the competitions?
• What factors contributed to a team’s victory, and what challenges led to a team’s defeat?
• In a team setting, what do you think is more valuable— individual excellence or collective coordination?
• How do individual sports differ from team sports in terms of skills and mindset?
• What role do communication and mutual understanding play in team sports?
The responses from students were truly insightful. They recognized that sports teach lessons far beyond physical fitness— they instill resilience, teamwork, and the value of effort. Many realized that understanding their teammates and working together towards a common goal was just as important as individual skill. The discussions helped them grasp the deeper essence of competition, discipline, and self-improvement.
The Lasting Impact of Sports Day
The first Sports Day at Pragathi Alt School was more than just an event; it was an experience that will be cherished for years to come. It was a day where students not only competed but also learned invaluable lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom. They gained practical knowledge, built confidence, and experienced the power of teamwork and perseverance firsthand.
For a school that values special education and inclusive learning, this event was a testament to how sports can be a great equalizer— a space where all children, regardless of their abilities, can shine. Through this event, the students of Pragathi Alt School discovered that sports activities on the field teach more than everyday school lessons. It was an unforgettable day filled with energy, enthusiasm, and learning— a stepping stone towards many more successful sports days in the future!
We look forward to making next year’s Sports Day even bigger and better!
