Dyslexia Walk

On October 20, 2024, Pragathi Alt School and Learning Center proudly joined the vibrant crowd at Besant Nagar Beach for the Walk for Dyslexia event. Organized by GOLD Parent Support in collaboration with the Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) and Rotary District, the walk was an empowering initiative to raise awareness about dyslexia, a neurological condition that affects learning in children. Over 400 participants gathered in red, walking a one-kilometre stretch to mark Dyslexia Awareness Month. This event brought together schools, parents, educators, and prominent public figures, all united in a mission to spread awareness and promote understanding of dyslexia.

Pragathi Alt School and Learning Center, known for its commitment to inclusive education and student empowerment, had a significant presence at the event. Teachers and students marched alongside high-profile dignitaries such as former DGP Sylendra Babu and Secretary of Cooperation, Food, and Consumer Protection Department, J. Radhakrishnan. The students proudly held placards that read powerful messages like “Dyslexia thinking is different thinking,” “Dyslexia is thinking out of the box,” and “Dyslexia is not a disease to cure.” These slogans not only reflected the school’s deep understanding of dyslexia but also its determination to change the way society perceives it.

The students of Pragathi Alt School felt an immense sense of responsibility as they actively engaged with peers from other schools, discussing their placards and the importance of dyslexia awareness. It was more than just a walk—it was a shared moment of learning, acceptance, and solidarity.

A highlight of the event was the interaction between the students of Pragathi Alt School and former DGP Sylendra Babu. Known for his dedication to fitness and discipline, he took the time to talk to the students about the importance of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. His words left a lasting impact, encouraging the children to integrate regular exercise into their daily lives as a way of staying both physically and mentally strong. The students were thrilled and motivated, taking individual pictures with the chief guests, which marked a memorable moment in their journey of self-awareness and advocacy.

Pragathi Alt School’s participation in the Walk for Dyslexia showcased the school’s core values of empathy, inclusion, and empowerment. By actively engaging in such a significant event, the school reaffirmed its commitment to promoting awareness about dyslexia and supporting diverse learners. It was a day of pride, reflection, and action, as Pragathi Alt School walked hand in hand with the community to champion a cause that is both meaningful and urgent.

As the students held their heads high, they reminded everyone present that true learning is about embracing diversity. In the words of an anonymous author, “Dyslexia is not a limitation; it is simply a different way the mind works, proving that there are many paths to brilliance.”
